Annual Swiss Heritage Celebration
The first celebrations began in 1974 and were held at the Swiss Memorial Elementary School. There were demonstrations like splitting shingles and how to cut grass with a scythe. Documents showcasing the history of the Swiss Colony were displayed. The Dutch Maid Bakery provided tasty treats. The event continued into the evening with a potluck dinner and dancing to the music of a local blue grass band.
Celebration Today
Visitors and members now celebrate at the Stoker-Stampfli Farm Museum on the last Saturday each July. The museum is owned and maintained by the Grundy County Swiss Historical Society. The farm dating back to the 1800’s is a lovely place to share in the day’s activities. There is wine and cheese tasting under the “ole’ shed” that once housed the Stampfli family’s early model Ford car.
